Glossary

  • Affiliate Marketing - A form of advertising/marketing in which a company pays its Affiliate partners a commission for sales and/or leads generated through the Affiliates marketing activities.
  • Bootstrapping - starting on minimum capital and using cashflow plus creative ways to support a start-up business until it turns profitable.
  • Business Angel - A private investor who contributes money and experience to early stage investments.
  • Business Plan - A business plan should clearly explain the what, why, when, who and how of the business. It should be a comprehensive explanation of the opportunity, the people involved, the money required to implement the plan, where it will come from and what financial results the opportunity is likely to produce.
  • Distress Purchase - something you only buy at the last possible moment, when it is unavoidable and you have no other options for example cold and flu medicine.
  • Entrepreneur - someone who is willing to assume the responsibility, risk and rewards of starting and operating a business.
  • Franchise - a business arrangement in which knowledge, expertise and often a trade mark or trade name are licensed to an operator, generally for an initial fee and a yearly payment.
  • Guerilla Marketing - unconventional marketing intended to get maximum results from minimal resources.
  • Initial Public Offering (IPO) - The process of taking a privately owned company public, by listing its shares on a stock exchange. Sometimes referred to as “going public”.
  • Niche - a small but potentially profitable market segment.
  • Pay Per Click (PPC) - advertising model in which advertisers pay for click-throughs to their website.
  • Pitch - describing your business opportunity, product or service to a potential investor, client or customer in the hope of recieving business or investment.
  • Point Of Difference - what it is that makes your business unique.
  • SME - Small To Medium Enterprise they are companies that employ less than 250 people and have a turnover in the low millions.
  • Unique Selling Proposition (USP) - The reason why somebody should buy from you and not your competition. The unique benefits that your products or services offer consumers.
  • Venture Capital - Venture capital is financing provided by wealthy independent investors, banks, and financing companies to help new businesses get started, reach the next level of growth, or go public. In return for the money they put up, also called risk capital, the investors receive some combination of equity, profits, or royalties and may play a role in the company’s management.
  • Viral Marketing - advertising that propagates itself. Viral advertising refers to marketing techniques that seek to exploit pre-existing social networks to produce exponential increases in brand awareness, through viral processes similar to the spread of an epidemic.
