The Internet makes so many new business ideas possible and despite being long past the dot com boom there are still some great new ideas coming to fruition one of which is the fantastically simple but brilliant idea MyFootballClub. In effect it takes the idea of a group buy and applies it to ownership of a football club.
The site is looking for 50,000 members, each of which will pay £35 and this money will then be used to buy a controlling interest in a football club. The members will then (through the site presumably) be able to vote on team selection and on which players to buy and sell.
Given the passion most supporters have for their teams, the anger they feel when the team is sold to an owner they are not happy with and the fact that £35 will barely buy a single game ticket for most teams I can see this really taking off.
On a somewhat academic note should the team do well this could also be the largest possible proof in support of the wisdom of crowds.
The idea could also easily be extended into other areas too, just think of the millions of Formula One, Rugby, Cricket, etc fans worldwide. Why stop there though, those of us that want to be green and reduce our carbon footprint could get together and buy/start our own power generation companies.
