Setting DUMB Goals

on May 22nd, 2008

If you’ve ever read about goal setting you are sure to have come across the idea of SMART goals. On the other hand you might not have heard of DUMB goals, depending on what you read DUMB goals are defined as:

  1. Doable, Understandable, Manageable & Beneficial. (Wikipedia)
  2. Decisive, Unique, Meaningful and Bold. (Jeff De Cagna)
  3. Dreamy, Unrealistic, Motivating and Bold. (Roger Bauer)

All three are interesting alternatives to the SMART(ER) approach, Wikipedia’s probably being the most directly comparable. De Cagna and Bauer’s suggestions however, may well be more inspiring for entrepreneurs and their teams.

The only criticism I would have is the lack of a time element, otherwise as Parkinson’s Law states "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion." Lets be honest how often do we finish a project, no matter how big or small, only when it’s due?

You mean spending way too much time on something that should only take half the time. My dumb goal would be to stop wasting time.
