Solar Powered Cars

on April 19th, 2007

Solar powered cars are cool, they epitomise what a high tech vehicle should look like:

Ok so it’s unlikely that we’ll be able to totally power a family car from solar energy in the short term but we could be using solar energy to solve a problem with modern cars. However projects like the Automotive X Prize will help move that research and development along.

You see, my old MG is great it’s trusty, reliable and the battery has never yet run out, even when I leave it garaged all winter. However the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI that I used to have would have a flat battery if I hadn’t used it for more than two weeks. The problem is modern cars have alarms, immobilisers, tracker etc etc that all continually draw power and sooner or later drain the battery and repeatedly draining a battery will shorten it’s life.

So my idea for all those in the car manufacturing business, how about putting a solar panel in the roof of the car which can generate enough energy to offset the drain from the alarm and other devices?
