Treadmill Desks

on March 18th, 2008

Last week Jonathan Fields wrote an article which caught my eye. In the article he explains how working from home it’s always easy enough to exercise in summer, but like many of us he’s not so keen in winter when it’s wet cold and windy outside. He’s found a solution however that allows him to “burn 600 calories a day blogging” - a treadmill desk.

A treadmill desk is a treadmill with a desk built over it. According to the blog Treadmill Desks, Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic came up with the idea of a “Treadmill Desk”. Dr Levine’s based this on his research that revealed that on the average his subjects burned 100 calories more every hour while walking slowly (1 mile per hour) than they did sitting in a chair.

So he suggests that if we all swap our time sat at a desk, in front of a computer with time walking while we work we would all be fitter and healthier. In fact he reckons that if we spent six hours a day on the treadmill desk at just one mile per hour we could loose 43 pounds in a year.

There’s a US company that makes them, but as yet no one is selling a product in the UK so it’s a good business opportunity for someone. In the meantime those of us that could stand to loose some weight will have to make do with building our own - not to worry there’s plenty of examples here.

Here’s a video of some coverage it’s recieved in the USA:

Excellent idea although I think some sort of pedal thing under the desk would be better. I’m sure you could even make it so that the power generated was used to run your computer thus saving on electricity as well as getting people fit. I’m permenantly jiggling my legs when sat at the desk but knowing it was saving money would be an added incentive.
