A reader asks:

I’ve heard you can make money blogging, so as a blogger can you tell me, does blogging make you any money?

Unfortunately like many Internet business ideas blogging is often presented as a way to “get rich quick”, don’t be fooled it’s not a quick route to riches beyond your wildest dreams. On the other hand you can make a lot of money blogging, there are several well known bloggers that make a six figure income. Perhaps, most famously of all one of the early blog networks, Weblogs Inc was sold to AOL for a rumoured $25 million.

The reality however is that the number of bloggers making a six figure income is minuscule compare to how many bloggers there are out there. It’s rather like being a rock or pop star, there’s millions of people trying to be one, but very few ever make it. As for the blogs being sold for millions of dollars, they’re more like online magazines and they operate much like the publishers of those magazines, usually having invested millions of dollars starting up. Don’t kid yourself that you can replicate their success in a matter of weeks.

On the other hand it is really, really easy to make money blogging. It’s so easy anyone can do it. But there’s a big difference between making $20 a month and making $10,000 a month, anyone can hit $20 fairly easily, but getting to $10,000 (or more) takes a lot of hard work.

Do I make money from this blog? Yes I do, after all the blog promotes my business expertise and lets people know that I offer business consultancy, some of those people then become customers and I make money from them. The advertising makes some money too.
