Richard Duszczak of Cartoon Studio has just drawn me another version of my caricature ready for use with the forthcoming update to the Top 100 Business Blogs and as a result I was looking at his website earlier when I spotted an email he’s recieved, I’ve paraphrased but essentially the gist is:
I have for some time now wanted to try my hand at becoming a cartoonist. How did you start? How difficult is it to have your work published?
While Richard is far better qualified to address the specifics of the cartoon industry it occurred to me that there has probably never been a better, or easier time to become a cartoonist.
Why? Because of the Internet. Simply put, why bother spending time trying to get published, instead spend the time producing the best cartoons you can and then self publish them (perhaps on a blog). It’ll cost you next to nothing and you’ll be able to reach a worldwide audience. You might then be able to make a living off that audience or at least leverage it into a publishing deal.
