How To Recruit Knowledge Workers

on November 22nd, 2007

recruitment

Businesses today depend more and more on knowledge workers, that is workers whose knowledge and experience is specialised and according to Peter Drucker should be viewed by a company as a capital asset. A point on which I agree with him entirely.

Software developers are a great example of today’s knowledge workers and they are rarely motivated entirely by money, instead they need to be treated like volunteers. So this recruitment attempt may well backfire and demotivate the existing employees while at the same time attracting the wrong sort of employees.

The photo however is a great example of how NOT to recruit. Why? Because it comes across as cheap, badly thought out and reminds me of those “make £2K per week working from home” flyers that you see posted about. As it’s also at the entrance to the business park on which they are based it might well give visiting customers the wrong impression, cheapening their brand.

It’s odd though as it’s a very competitive salary for someone with only 2+ years experience that they are asking for. Perhaps the imbalance is explained by the fact that they are looking for a marketing person for half what they are willing to pay for a software engineer. If I were them I’d be spending more on getting a good marketing manager on board.

With a good marketing manager on board they could actually take this misdirected attempt at guerrilla marketing and turn it into a great way of recruiting.

Hat tip to Worse Than Failure for the story and picture.
