Bring Back That Smoky Pub Smell!

on September 18th, 2007

I was talking to a client no-smoking while enjoying a virtual smoking break* a couple of days ago and she mentioned that the smoking ban has had an unexpected impact on her local pub. In particular now that the pub doesn’t smell smoky it’s easier to smell the other customers! The other customers regularly having come direct from various sporting activities.

Apparently it’s a problem other pubs are having too so now they’re looking to import a suitable “pub smell” and smoke is one such smell on offer. I have to admit as a non smoker I think the ban is great, but I didn’t expect it create a business opportunity like this!

The BBC reports that a club in York is installing fragrance machines that will offer the smell of strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. I’m just not sure that I fancy my local pub smelling of strawberries…

*A virtual smoking break is what us non smokers take when we decide to pop outside and enjoy the sun while our colleagues, customer or friends have a cigarette. Except it’s much healthier.
