10 Top Tips For Finding Internet Business Ideas

on September 17th, 2007

Most successful Internet business ideas are targeted at a niche market, but finding those niches can be hard, so here’s my top ten tips for finding a niche.

  1. List your hobbies, chances are if you’re into it other people are too.
  2. List your interests there’s sure to be other people with a similar interest.
  3. Read the Sunday papers and see what’s getting talked about. As far as I can tell it was the Sunday papers that made Sudoko popular in the UK.
  4. Pop down to your local newsagents and check out the magazine racks - if there’s a magazine about it, there’s an audience and the magazines usually give you an indication of the size of the audience - more magazines means a bigger audience and most magazines also print their audited circulation inside too.
  5. Look for problems that people have in their lives or at work (think how to, can’t, won’t).
  6. Read Forums related to your hobbies and interests are and see what common questions regularly get asked.
  7. Check out the bestseller book lists to see what’s currently a hot topic.
  8. Use Technorati to see what is popular with bloggers.
  9. Use Google Trends, http://www.google.com/trends and http://www.google.com/trends/hottrends to see what is being searched for and the trend.
  10. Check out social bookmarking sites such as del.icio.us, digg and reddit to see what’s popular.

Once you’ve got some ideas start pick some keywords that you think are relevant and start researching them with GoodKeywords, Wordtracker or the Overture Keyword Tool, to find the related search terms which will often help you refine the niche even further.

Once you’ve got your niche ideas use Google to evaluate the level of competition in each niche and pick the one that appears to offer the best trade off of interest versus competition.
