John Forbat is an entrepreneur who has spent the last twenty years helping UK companies expand into the USA. His book is intended to allow the budding entrepreneur to study and apply the lessons he has learned through practical experience. He hopes to show that “entrepreneurs can successfully challenge the normally accepted limits of what is possible in business”, although I’m not sure we need convincing of that, and sometimes, as in the case of many dot com’s, it’s not a good idea.
John Forbat is an electrical engineer by training. He worked with several well-known firms in the aircraft, avionics and electronics industries, where he experienced ‘how large companies are managed – and mismanaged’. He then moved into a number of highly entrepreneurial businesses the successes (and the odd failure) of these businesses taught him the essentials of entrepreneurship and provide the basis of this book. He also has previously had articles published in Management Today.
Unfortunately many of the examples in the book are vague referring to “a company” or “a product”. It’s an odd approach as the book is largely autobiographical deriving the principle points from Forbat’s own experiences which seem to be primarily as an interim sales manager / managing director. As a result of this vagueness the examples feel abstract and lacking in authenticity which really detracts from the value of the book.
