Iain Morgan Wins The Final Of Peter Jones’ Tycoon

on July 24th, 2007

tycoon2The final was possibly the worst episode of Peter Jones’ Tycoon yet, it was filmed outside so we got dodgy sound levels and lots of “wind in their hair” shots of the candidates. The presenter couldn’t even remember the names of the contestants…

Content wise we got little more than a short 45 second pitch from each candidate saying why they thought they should win then we got the winner announced.

I spent a good five seconds wondering why Justin Chieffo’s pitch was showing ADSA branded carrier bags when they’re not a customer, is he trying to suck up or was Peter Jones TV selling advertising within the show?

Iain Morgan won, which I think is a shame, don’t get me wrong I hugely admire the job he’s done of selling those helicopters but that’s all it appears to be; Jones paid for a container of helicopters and Morgan acted as a (good) salesman and sold them, it’s not a business it’s just a good salesman selling a good product. Where is he when the product runs out and/or the market looses interest? Does he have any more ideas for exclusive products that are or will be in demand?

Personally I wanted to see either Lauren Pope or the Sod Gardening ladies win, while both had quite a bit to learn about being entrepreneurs they had what to my mind are sustainable long term businesses.

    Gemma,

That kind of language is not acceptable here so it’s been edited. Please feel free to express your opinions but please keep the language clean.

Reading this I’d assume you work for Peter Jones TV, if so have you cleared making this kind of public comment with your employer?

Personally I don’t believe I’ve been putting Peter Jones down, his book Tycoon is excellent, the show however was not as it lacked real content I don’t recall ever seeing the 10 golden rules in Jones’ book on the show.

I’m dissapointed ITV cut the show down I think that having agreed to air it they should have continued to air the full series, but sadly they didn’t.

Unfortunately, in business, it sadly does not matter how many hours effort go in, nor how much money is invested - any product (whether a TV programme or a Toaster) is going to be judged by the consumer on the output and the output alone.

This is the cruel reality of the business world - and it bears no relation to the cotton wool lined worlds of being a student or an employee that you may be used to.

    Rachel,

Thanks for commenting. As you say it’s the reality of a free market economy. While it can mean brutal failure it also allows us all the opportunity for immense success.

I really wanted it to be a good programme.

It proved a couple of things.

1 Stick to what you know which Iain Morgan did

2 Don’t invent or build anything. It is too difficult.

Iain succeeded at what he was good at which was coming up with the idea and selling the product.

The programme lacked tension and excitement.

I watched the pitches on the website and they were interesting.

Dragon’s den is about the pitches and The Apprentice is about the tension.

Unfortunately Tycoon had neither of these.

I am currently reading Peter Jones book

    Best wishes

    Peter Wade

This programme was rubbish. As others have said here, you can’t expect everybody to love something just because you put hours of work into it. I could spend days on a painting, but it would be cr*p because I can’t paint. Peter Jones TV botched this series, and they should run off, lick their wounds and then go and do something they are good at. Iain Morgan’s business won’t last long - trust me.

Does anyone know what his business is called and if it’s branched out into other areas?

He is still trying to sell the micro cars he used to push from a market stall in Portsmouth, probably because they are made at the same factory as his ‘Salvation’ helicopter. I am not aware of any further projects on his behalf, but he will need them to keep his business going. There are already far better helicopters on the market for the same price or less - I notice Maplins have one now that knocks the spots if Iain’s.
