Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

on July 21st, 2007

harrypotterHarry Potter And The Deathly Hallows is out today and no doubt fans will be over the moon. Entrepreneurs and marketers will perhaps be more interested in studying the buzz created around the launch. MarketingBlurb addresses the issue by asking Will Buzz Marketing Hurt Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?

Meanwhile Seth Godin addresses the issue of spoilers and keeping the story a secret by suggesting an alternate way of marketing and releasing books in which he suggests:

Publish the first edition of the book without the last three chapters. Take your time, save the $20 million. Every purchaser then gets access (hey, everyone gets access) to the last three chapters on launch day.

Books are souvenirs. No one is going to read Potter online, even if it’s free. Holding and owning the book, remembering when and how you got it… that’s what you’re paying for.

I have to say I’d agree with him, I love my books, they are some of my most prized possessions and I’ll only ever read a book online if the content is extremely compelling and I have absolutely no other way of reading it.
