According to international research conducted by media agency Universal McCann the Apple will struggle to sell it’s planned 10 million iPhone’s by the end of 2008. 10 million phones is by the way only 1% of the market. The Guardian quotes Universal McCann as saying the iPhone:
“…will struggle to break into the mainstream”
I can only conclude that this research was either funded by one of Apple’s competitors or was conducted by a hermit at Universal McCann who has not witnessed Apples success with the iPod. I mean really in the next 18 months Apple won’t sell 10 million phones? Have you heard of the iPod, which Apple have managed to sell over 100 million units of. So what is Universal McCann’s reasoning behind this prediction?
“…because of a lack of a 3G connection and low demand for converged devices”
They also gathered stats to show that:
“Only 31% of Americans surveyed said they wanted a device with multiple capabilities, and that dropped to 27% in Japan.”
and
“In the US, 60% of mobile phone users already own three or more specialist devices such as digital cameras, MP3 players and portable media devices.”
Maybe that explains it, their questions have totally ignored the hype behind the iPhone and the fact that Apple make good stuff that people just want, even if it’s not the best.
I wonder what the response would be if they asked “Do you want an iPhone?”
So two questions:
- Do you want an iPhone?
- Do you think the iPhone will sell more than 10 million units?
