Pitching Your Business Idea To Venture Capitalists

on May 21st, 2007

I came across a great post by Ben Yoskovitz on the Instigator Blog titled 5 Lessons Learned From Pitching VCs. It details what he’s learnt pitching his new startup Standout Jobs. As getting funding whether you approach a bank, business angel or venture capitalist isn’t easy, it’s always worth reading about the lessons others have learned.

In summary the points are:

  1. Each VC has their own style – tailor your pitch to the VC.
  2. Use PowerPoint effectively.
  3. Don’t take offence – it’s not personal it’s business.
  4. Pitch with conviction but state your assumptions.
  5. Sell passion, concrete ideas, and then go for the money.

He elaborates on each point in the post and has followed it up with another post on Presenting Financials to Venture Capitalists.
